Win for Safer Lorries campaign Local campaigners expressed their delight today as TfL & London Councils announced that HGVs not fitted with pedestrian & cyclist safety features will be banned across London. The traffic regulation order process could be completed as early as September, and by the end of the year at the latest. In March 2013, the Wandsworth Environment Forum (WEF), along with 8 other civic society groups co-signed an open letter to the council calling on them to adopt the procurement policies advocated by the London Cycling Campaign to make our streets safer. In recent years, sadly, a number of local people have lost their lives as a result of being run over by lorries. It is a fitting tribute to those who have lost loved ones to know that real action is finally being taken which will reduce the chance of others having to go through similar loss. Jon Irwin, WEF Co-chair, commented: “I’m really pleased that the concerted efforts of local campaigners and other groups across London have been able to deliver this result today. We still have a long way to go in reducing road danger in Wandsworth, but the signs are encouraging particularly with progress being made on wider 20mph rollouts.” --------------------- Released 30th Jan 2013 Original article with news: bikebiz/index.php/news/read/london-to-ban-unsafe-hgvs/015958 Wandsworth Environment Forum (WEF) is an umbrella group of civic society organisations in the borough.
