Wind, is it a Good Source to Use for Back up Electrical Power? Cost? In the last 20 years, the Earth’s natural wind movement has become one of the most interesting methods to produce electrical power. There are many benefit,s as well as objections to this process. Wind generated power can be used as either a primary, as supplemental, and/or as a back up power source. Trying to overcome the visibility of the wind turbines used to capture the effects of the wind and the noise they make are a couple of the largest obstacles and slowing its use. Another current major issue concerning wind energy and the typical residential household is cost. There are two basic methods, Direct & Stored, of capturing the wind and utilizing for electrical power to consider. Similar to solar energy, the Direct method generally operates using Wind Turbines in place of solar panels. The electrical power generated from the wind turbines goes directly through an inverte,r which is directly connected to a home or business breaker box. This method produces usable electrical current only while the wind is blowing. The Stored method generally uses the same items described above in the Direct method, with the addition of a large set of batteries to store the power being generated. This method allows any unused battery stored wind power to be used during calm or on light breezy days when wind power generation is limited and is limited to the excess power stored in the batteries. “Wind turbines under 100 kilowatts cost roughly $3,000 to $5,000 per kilowatt of capacity. That means a 20 kilowatt (KW) machine (the size needed to power a medium sized home) might cost $60,000-$100,000.” Source – Wind Industry, How much do wind turbines cost?,
