Windows has won out. After 18+ months of persistent suggestions to upgrade to 8.1, Ive acquiesced. Lately, each day brings another function degrading, an app inexplicably missing, or an important file disappearing into the ether. Sounds like a virus, right? Nope. Three different anti-virus software couldnt find a thing wrong. I tried scanning and repair software. Again, nothing was apparently wrong. I tried a few other diagnostic tools I found. Still nothing was wrong. Except yesterday I could play sound. This morning I couldnt, no matter the app or program. I tried to find the missing files and apps. Earlier versions of Windows allowed me to repair, upgrade or at least pinpoint the trouble spot. No more. Windows 8 came with my laptop so no CDs. The recovery disks Id made at purchase didnt work. I kept being redirected around the Windows internet site in a pathetically obvious attempt to ensure I didnt download version 8. I suspect a conspiracy, along the lines of the unseen switches that kill a machine shortly after the warranty period expires, forcing you to replace an item that should honestly last longer. I try not to give in to obvious schemes and campaigns to get me to spend for the sake of spending (hence the long delay in upgrading--why fix what isnt broken, and spend my data allowance in the process?). But my laptop (and iPad) is my world. In my preparations for my travelling future, my laptop is a vital resource. I tapped my fingers, asked Summers dog for advice, wandered around the house emptying my mind in domestic tasks, waiting for my right course of action to flow to me on a wave of intuitive insight. What to do? Download as the Bureaucratic Masters wish? Resist and come up with another option? Allow the laptop to continue to decline? Pray for an injection of funds for a repair or new laptop? What to do? What to do? The answer came: Download the upgrade. Buggar. Damn. Triple-decker f*cktruck. The Bureaucratic Masters known as Microsoft/Windows have won. There goes my data allowance for this month.
