Wing Chun’s en-gardé position places your hands ahead of you - TopicsExpress

Wing Chun’s en-gardé position places your hands ahead of you not only for protection, but to shorten the distance of your attack. Other schools train their students to punch with their fists positioned at the waist or face. After each punch, they draw the fist back to the original position. The argument is that the longer distance enables acceleration, meaning the fist generates more force at the point of contact. It is true, but at the cost of time, distance, and energy. The reality of fighting is that we are hitting human bodies—not boards and bricks. There is no need to generate the kind of force that is required to smash bricks, particularly when you strike vital parts of the body. Besides, you will be hitting a moving target while you are on the move yourself. You just can’t deliver the same kind of force as when you are in a stationary position hitting a stationary object that is immobile. -- Spread of Sifu Danny Xuans article from the upcoming Issue No. 20.
