Wings slay Centurions By Declan Schroeder The Linden Christian Wings defeated the Fort Richmond Centurions 7-2 at Wayne Fleming Arena, in the last game of their five game home stand. Alex Sirant led the charge with four points, one goal and three assists. Derek Reuther and Jacob Janzen both had one goal and two assists. Ben Kirton had two assists, as did Noah Yaworsky. Chi Chi Yang had a goal and an assist for the Centurions. The Centurions had three good scoring chances right off the bat, less than 30 seconds in. Josh Anderson, who was thrust into the starting role despite not being scheduled to start, made two good pad stops and a great sprawling save to keep Fort Richmond off the board. The Centurions opened the scoring with a power play goal at 3:47. With Jacob Janzen in the box for interference, Nevin O’Donnell, who was at the side of the net, saw Chi Chi Yang open on the other side. He dished it to him cross-crease, leading to a tap in past Anderson. The Wings didn’t waste much time tying the game, though. Starting in the neutral zone, freewheeling defenseman Dawson Derksen entered the zone, zoomed past everyone to the outside, cut to the front of the net, and tucked the puck past the outstretched pad of Bradley White. Noah Yaworsky had the assist on the goal that came at 5:29. Just 23 seconds later, the Wings took a 2-1 lead, when Jacob Janzen wristed a whistling shot high past White from the high slot. Alex Sirant had the assist. The Wings scored less than a minute after that to double their lead. After Derek Reuther was stopped by White, Alex Sirant took the rebound and had several whacks at the puck before it finally trickled over the line. Jacob Janzen had the second assist. It was the third goal for the Wings in 1:05. 10 seconds left in the period, Kevin MacKinnon notched his scond of the season with a low point shot that went five hole on White. Sirant and Janzen tallied assists. Five minutes into the second, Carter Scantlebury had a good chance on the breakaway, but was stone by Anderson. At 8:50, the Wings made the score 5-1. After Ben Kirton took a shot from the slot that generated a rebound, Joseph Masi snuck in from the point to bury the rebound. The Wings kept their foot on the proverbial gas pedal entering the third, scoring 28 seconds in. Derek Reuther took aim and fired his 24th goal of the season short side, top corner. Janzen and Sirant had assists. At 10:58, the Wings made it 7-1. While Fort Richmond though the Wings had iced the puck, Ben Kirton, taking nothing for granted, hustled and got to the puck first, as icing was waved off. He dished it out in front from the corner to Tanner McCrae, who chipped the puck by White from in close. Fort Richmond’s Carter Scantlebury scored to make the score 7-2 with less than three minutes left, but it didn’t really matter, as the Wings rolled to victory. The shots were 45-25 in favour of the Wings. The Wings power play was 0-3. The Centurions power play was 1-6. In unsettling news, Wings’ goaltender Ryan Thomas and his family were involved in a car accident today. Fortunately, there was no loss of life although Thomas was injured. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers going forward. Three stars: ***: Derek Reuther: Reuther continues to scatter the scoresheet with 8’s, with a goal and two assists. **: Josh Anderson: Josh Anderson stepped up and made 23 saves after he was presumably unceremoniously yanked out of driver’s education and thrust into the crease. The goaltending duties will be his going forward. *: Alex Sirant: He tallied three assists and had a goal as well. He is now three points away from being the first player in Wings history to reach 100 points. Assistant Coach Brett Sirant spoke after the game about refocusing after the team received the bad news about their goaltender. “It’s definitely tough to hear” he said. “It’s good that everyone was ok and safe. We brought the guys in together, talked about it and prayed. It really got the focus together.” He also spoke about Anderson’s performance. “He did very well” he said. “He got the digger award! It’s a good thing he came to hockey instead of driver’s ed.” (If someone could inform this reporter on what the digger award is that’d be great.) The Wings hit the ice again on Friday, when they play the Sisler Spartans. 5 out of the Wings’ last 6 games will be on the road. Debbie MacKinnon will bring you the coverage.
