Winning Words © The Lord make his face shine upon you. Numbers 6:25 Imagine yourself alone in a huge crowd—a crowd that moves from one place to another through a canyon of office buildings that scrape the sky. Imagine the faces of 20,000 strangers looking back at you as you look toward the crowd. Now image that you spot a face you know among that mass of people. In fact, that face belongs to the person you love most of all those on the entire earth. From across the street you and your loved one exchange smiles of warmth, affection, love, and approval as you begin to move through the crowd toward one another. That’s the picture painted by Numbers 6:25. The phrase, “the Lord make his face shine upon you” paints a picture of God’s deep love for each of us as his individual children. It is a picture of affection and acceptance, and of the intense commitment in our Lord’s heart. That commitment draws us ever closer to God and evokes our love for him in return. Although it is beyond our human capacity to envision or comprehend, our Lord’s love for his people goes far beyond the kind of “group policy” that covers all of us at once. Rather, he loves each of us individually—one by one by one. Despite the billions of people in the world, our God knows all of his children intimately. He recognizes each of us for who we are—not as just another face in the crowd. God knows the shape of your body and the contour of your shoulders. He shaped the silhouette of your nose as you lay helpless inside your mother’s womb. When he hears you laugh, he instant recognizes the sound of your laughter. When you cry, he notices each tear and wipes it away, for not only does the Lord know, he also cares! Think about it: · You are chosen by the Creator of the universe for a unique place in his family. · God holds you in the hollow of his hand—and in the warmth of his heart. · Your Lord smiles upon you whether you are awake or asleep, at home or away, working or playing. God finds joy in his relationship with you. · You are dearly, deeply, and eternally loved by the One who sent his only Son to die for your sins so that you could be in a right relationship with him. God is yours—personally. You are his—personally. What else could possibly matter? Today it is my prayer that we all feel the smile of God’s unconditional love as we serve him in this life and throughout eternity. God loves each of us as if there were only one of us. ~~Augustine
