Winnipeg Sankirtana Party in Saskatoon Haribolo! It was a festival of books ! We were selling small Krsna Books as fast almost, as we could open the cases ! Vols 1,2,3, we would approach everyone on the mall downtown in Saskatoon, then a small Canadian northern prairie city of some 80,000 souls. Most were simple pious honest charitable Canadians, as it was back then. We were fired up, as the sankirtana was very good ! Krsnas mercy, every so often we would find ourselves in a place were we were being hugely successful. From about 10 AM to 5 ish, we alternatively ripped open cases or ran from person to person. Our obvious energy and dedication to whatever our cause was, impressed. People gave us money almost automatically. The devotees felt it. When one starts, its very hard, as no one, at least not me, wants to approach strangers in the street and try to get some money and give them a book. Nowadays i would not hesitate, but back then, in the seventies, i was only in my early twenties and shy, really. But, after forcing oneself for an hour or two, one may suddenly feel enlivened, empowered even...as the Lord recognizes the sincere service and awards one the ability required. In fact, experienced sankirtana devotees know that if one wants to get the highest nectar, book distribution is the way. At noon, the sankirtana van would appear, therew would be a short kirtan, and we would take cream cheese, oranges, dates, and other such high energy warming prasadam. And Krsna! We were passing out the Krsna books like there was no tommorrow, at least 500 or so that day, small books. Once downtown died down, we drove out to the liquor stores, as on the weekends, there is a constant flow of people. Sure, it was mid winter, but the flow of nectar made it seem like nothing to us. Every so often, we would duck into a door and warm up for a few minutes. We collected an additional $100. or so per devotee in that way in the evening, but no books, as they tended to get thrown out at that place. Sometimes we also did door to door book selling, which i preferred, as it was much calmer and lepassionately demanding. But mall and street magazine distribution always got one exceedingly Krishna conscious. By performing our duty in spite of the minds rebellion out of attchment to the Movement, we advanced quickly in our spiritual status. Imagine the Lords satisfaction to see these young boys and girls fearlessly and determindely trying to do their service, even when they hated it, at first, haha, but did it anyway ! Then, He quickly rewards transcendental intelligence and bliss. We visited Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, at least ten times from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Had we had the forethought to collect some names and contacts, opening a center there would have been an easy business. It still would be, and Saskatoon is now in the hundreds of thousands of citizens. Oil money and jobs are there, of course. Comparatively, Regina was slow. Im pretty sure we beat out Denver temple that weekend! ~(>; )
