Winter Solstice...... The Winter Solstice in 2013 is June 21st, 5:04am. The Winter solstice is celebrated by modern Wiccans and Pagans, and there are many ways the festival is marked in modern times- though with some common rituals and traditions such as feasting, the Yule tree, the Yule log, fire and candles, evergreen wreaths, mistletoe, holly and ivy. Many of these pre-Christian customs have been appropriated and given new meaning by the Christian church- but modern Wiccans and Pagans point again to older meanings in these signs and symbols. In the context of research and rediscovery of Wicca and witchcraft practice by modern revivers like Gerald Gardiner, the Wiccan understanding is of natural renewal and regeneration. There was an ancient mid-Winter feast that accompanied the Solstice once again marked by modern Wiccans. Focus is on rituals which discard the past, and make resolutions for a better coming year
