Storm System to move across the Rockies on Christmas. A winter storm system will move across the Rocky Mountains Region Christmas day and night. This storm system will produce accumulating snow and gusty winds across the region. In general 4 to 7 inches of snow is expected Across southeast Wyoming below 7500 feet, with 2 to 5 inches in the western Nebraska Panhandle. The Snowy and Sierra Madre ranges will see upwards of around one foot, with 6 to 10 inches in the Laramie Range. The higher snow totals will occur along North and Northeast facing slopes. North to northeast winds will be gusting 25 to 30 mph Christmas afternoon through the night, which will produce areas of blowing snow through this time. Winter Storm Warning in effect from 11 am Thursday to 5 am MST Friday. The National Weather Service in Cheyenne has issued a Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow and blowing snow, which is in effect from 11 am Thursday to 5 am MST Friday. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect. Timing: snow will develop over southeast Wyoming in the late morning and early afternoon on Christmas and will continue through Christmas night. Snow will become moderate to heavy at times in the late afternoon and evening. Total snow accumulations, 4 to 7 inches with locally higher amounts possible. 8 to 11 inches possible in the southern Laramie Range and eastern foothills. Winds/visibility: north to northeast winds of 15 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph will combine with falling snow to reduce visibilities to less that one half mile. Impacts: those traveling on Christmas afternoon through Christmas night will experience very hazardous conditions as snow and blowing snow significantly reduce visibilities and cover roadways.
