Winter weather and cold forcing people to prepare early AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) – We’re still over a month away from the official start of winter, but it seems that winter weather is here to stay for a little while. On another chilly western Massachusetts Saturday morning the shelves at Rocky’s Ace Hardware in Agawam were stocked with gear for both fall and winter. You know the cold is coming early when fall supplies, like rakes, still feature so prominently at area hardware stores. Yet many people were focused more on getting the winter items ready to go. “We bought some wood, we went and bought some water in case of power outages, you know, the basic supplies for the winter…We haven’t got any ice melt yet, we actually forgot about that. We did buy some new snow shovels, we just got our snow blower tuned up and ready to go,” said Shawn Louder from Suffield. It’s no wonder shovels and ice melt are already selling with temperatures 10 degrees colder than normal with more winter weather coming this week, but some people feel it was bound to happen. “Usually we have a couple frosts by now anyway. We’ve had a lot of heat, warm days throughout October and November so we kind of lucked out for a while,” said Eric Olson from West Springfield. Preparedness has been the name of the game according to Agawam Rocky’s store manager Bruce Drewniany “I actually had people coming in two, three weeks ago looking for some snow shovels, snow brushes and things…thinking about last winter at the end of the season when everybody ran out of all the snow shovels, they ran out of rock salt,” said Drewniany. In fact, even though there’s plenty now, Drewniany expects a ice melt shortage sometime this winter due to a limited supply of magnesium chloride…a necessary ingredient in concrete safe ice melt.
