While many think of this as the ‘un-official start’ to the summer, here’s a bit of the history: Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the USA. Decoration Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan as a way to remember those from the Civil War. The date was chosen because it wasnt the anniversary of any particular battle. In 1882, the name was changed to Memorial Day and servicemen who had died in all previous wars were honored as well. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a federal holiday on the last Monday in May. Memorial Day is not limited to honor only those Americans from the armed forces. It is also a day for personal remembrance, and Families and individuals honor the memories of their loved ones who have died. So there you have it!
