Wishing my cousin @BethFeldman a public shout-out on her birthday!! My birthday message: Today is your special day, Beth! Some fun birthday facts for your perusal: You were born on a brisk autumn Sunday (mean temp: 49°). 325,000 other babies were also born on November 3rd, but your birthday is by far my favorite! ♫ ‘You Send Me’♫ by Sam Cooke was playing on the radio. Nine months earlier your parents may have been listening to ‘Blue Monday’ by Fats Domino when they *ahem* ‘made you...’ back in February...sometime around Valentine’s Day. Or, perhaps they were inspired by a hip thrusting song by Elvis (or not). Your parents would only have seen him from the waist up on the Ed Sullivan Show. Dwight Eisenhower was president during which time there was a more benign strain of Republicanism. (I can say the same for Democrats.) For the book lover in you: ‘On the Road’ by Jack Kerouac was a best seller. This would have been the PERFECT book for your mother to read to you in utero (or not). Your developing ears may have heard “Good evening, ladies and gentlemen” on Alfred Hitchcock Presents (albeit muffled) while chillaxing in your mother’s womb. As a canine lover you will be pleased to know that Laika the dog was launched into space by the Soviets on Sputnik II. Unfortunately, Laika perished in orbit (sorry). If your hair were never cut since your day of birth it would be 24 feet long today and you would have given Rapunzel a run for her money. A wool tweed coat could be purchased on sale for $44 (regularly $59). D’Orsay made a perfume called Intoxication. It was sold in pretty crystal flasks that resembled the bottoms of ball gowns. A 2-letter, 4 number format was used to place telephone calls (ex. BRownie or BRowning-1234...that is, if no one was using the party line). Speaking of phones, a Hi-Fi 4-speed phone could be purchased for $99...hmmm...4 speeds, whatever happened to those anyway? A fast speed for those “let’s get this over with” calls, a slow speed for exchanging terms of endearment and two speeds in between? Please bring back this phone! Banks gave you GIFTS for opening accounts and as best as I can recall right up until the 80s when you were in full bloom. The Chicago Tribune was selling for $.25 which is fascinating since you can get the Washington Post for the same price today with an online discount. It was a simpler time. It was a grand time. It was time for the cerise sur le gâteau (icing on the [birthday] cake): the birth of a baby girl named Beth. Happy Birthday, Beth!!
