With John Keiffer stating he purchased a small car in the 70s for the gas mileage on the other post, it leads me to this. What was your first car? Mine? A 1968 Road Runner. I began working at the age of 10, as I was bound and determined to have my first car paid for and running when I turned 16. My brother found the old 68 Road Runner sitting in a field when I was 12, all grown up in weeds. Made the purchase for the whopping sum of 400 dollars. With the help of my brother, over the next 4 years, we stripped it down, cleaned it up, rebuilt the engine, dropped a new transmission in, jacked the rear end up, and added M50 wrinkle wall slicks. In the end? It had a 383 big block, four bolt main, high compression pistons, with a roller cam/lifters, and two Holly 1200 CFM double pumper carbs sitting on the intake. The engine was balanced, chromed and polished. She turned just shy of 800 horses. Needless to say, I had to run high octane additive to get her to run right, and, you could almost see the gas gauge drop the needle when racing. I had about $6000 in the car by the time I got done with her at age 16. That translates into about 25 Thousand in todays dollars. This is close to what she looked like sans the mods.
