With Regards To Pain And Pleasure Cicero argued with the Epicureans that, while certainly, like animals, we may reason that pain is something to avoid, there are times that we do painful things for a greater purpose and desire for a greater good. To take it to what is called in Christianity with agape/cariatas love, this means coming to understand and have faith in the love of Christ for humanity, and thus suffering the pain of the cross for salvation of Man. It also means coming to terms with suffering and possibly being a martyr for faith in Christ as a Christian. These theological virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity may be reviled by an Epicurean/Objectivist world view, based on the reason that they are supernatural and call for a trust in God and His promises. However, in as much as we can meet in the middle with Natural Law, this is where the Churchs teaching on social justice meets its purpose. By no means is it to give in to the world, but we can at least challenge the world to live up to the natural human virtues.
