People with disabilities do need heroes, not uncomplaining overcomers, but real disabled heroes who fight bias and battle for control of their lives and insist that they will make their mark in the world. Christy Brown, difficult and dangerous as he is, is such a hero. He embodies the consciousness of a new generation of people with disabilities who assert that for the overwhelming majority of us prejudice is a far greater problem than any impairment, discrimination is a bigger obstacle than disability. He reflects our demands for full human dignity, self-determination, and equal access to society and life. Christy Brown is a hero of our struggle. We will be inspired by his glorious disabled rage.
