With a proposal to bring back mixed script textbooks, Hanja is back in the news again. Some of the arguments presented in this segment are: 1. Hanja is necessary for Korean high culture, since it was used throughout the vast majority of Korean history 2. Hangul exclusivity has a sad history that originates from an overreaction to Japanese colonial policies on language 3. The vast majority of Koreans have experienced discomfort in reading Korean due to their lack of knowledge in Hanja 4. Hangul exclusivity is based on a belief in pure blood nationalism 5. Hangul exclusivity is hypocritical, because its advocates target only Sino-Korean words, not English words 6. South Korea is the only East Asian country (including North Korea) that does not require Hanja education in elementary schools.
