With all this talk of suicide, I thought that maybe itd be beneficial to share what I saw in Boot Camp on Parris Island back in 94. I can tell you that this event we bore witness to is something that I have carried around with me ever since, and Im willing to wager that the rest of my Platoon has never forgotten this either. We were just kids and we all handled the aftermath differently. The hardest thing for me to wrap my head around was the fact that this same Marine who was at my Delayed Entry Program family night (who thrashed me in front of my Dad), this same Marine who assured us that boot camp was 80% mental/20% physical; how could THAT Marine cave under his own mental pressure and take his own life 10 feet from me? It has taken me years to try and understand what depression can do to a person. Im still not sure that I understand, but Im way less angry about it now. RIP Sgt. Stumpf.
