With colder temperatures expected, Nueces Electric Cooperative - TopicsExpress

With colder temperatures expected, Nueces Electric Cooperative (NEC) wants to remind South Texans there is increased risk for home fires and power interruptions when the weather reaches colder than normal temperatures across the state. Many fires are preventable and citizens can reduce their risks by identifying potential hazards and following simple safety tips. The use of candles, heating sources and makeshift cooking methods can significantly increase the chances of a fire occurring. Following some basic safety tips can protect your home and keep you warm during the freeze, says John Sims, NEC CEO. In addition to an increased risk in home safety, please help conserve electricity in the morning hours. This includes lighting, heating and other electrical appliances. Electrical shortages are common on colder mornings in Texas. As homes wake up to begin the day, so do large commercial equipment. Just like a car needs to warm up longer in freezing temperatures, so do plants and other large-scale industrial equipment, which results in a higher than normal energy pull from the ERCOT grid Sims says. NEC Line Crews will be monitoring the electrical system Friday and throughout the weekend and will respond to outages and accidents as they occur. In the event your home experiences an outage, please call 361-387-2581 or 1-800-632-7288.
