With companies like Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple and other profit based internet companies its easy to forget the Web was founded on an open-source philosophy. The people responsible for thinking up the idea and inventing the mathematical means for this tool, which we use everyday to communicate and learn, were kind enough to give it all away for free! An attempt to subvert the exclusivity of the private sphere. Its funny how the modesty of people like Tim Berners Lee is always eclipsed by those who are willing to manipulate other peoples work for personal gain. The big data companies of our technological generation have definitely accelerated the evolution of culture, and because of that the consciousness of the citizens, but with all this Snowden/NSA business it seems that centralized agencies of power will do whatever it takes to maintain the existing model of capitalism(monetary system/consumerism etc). Capitalism is an exchange system, that can never find social balance due to the inherited privilege it harbors. A model where alienation of the consumer and the now fragile environment is necessary for it to function. The Remedy? Gift Culture. Just what the internet embodies.
