With corruption among Thai clergy spiralling out of control one can only wonder about the inability to address the topic within this caste. From the Sangka to the better monasteries and Buddhist universities, few if any monks dare to carry their criticism out into a discussion or even the public. Why this would be important? Because unless you want to be suspected of cover-ups and silent tolerance and looking away, the integrity of religious institutions will go into a quick and long lasting decline. Not that - as a Buddhist - I really care much about hierarchy and institutions based on tradition, but more about the victims of fraud, abuse and sheer profiteering. Thai Buddhism is in dire need of reform but so far I see only materialism and cowardice combined with viscous daemonization of those who dare to speak up.
