With it being severe weather season, nothing tears me up more than when during a severe weather event, someone tells me that they are relying on sirens to go off to take shelter... Come on now people! Its 2014 and we have more resources than this! -NOAA Weather Radios are inexpensive, they are nice to have during the overnight hours with audible alarms and invaluable with battery backup if power is interrupted! -if your cell phone is capable, enable your WEA Alerts for severe weather alerts that will automatically sound if it will impact your area. -Pay attention to forecasts throughout the day if you have any sneaking suspicion of severe weather or any storms for that matter (With the Northern Indiana storms during the early morning hours Tuesday, there was a PDS Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued, but I still have friends and know people who claim there was no warning or forementioning of approaching severe weather, plus with how different severe weather setups can be, it can be difficult for the NWS to issue warnings in a timely manner). -Please dont just wait for sirens to sound if you feel weather is getting dangerous in your area to take shelter, the sirens are more geared for those outdoors to get to shelter, not everyone may hear them indoors, so its not something to use as a crutch. Heed the warning if you hear them by all means, but keep in mind that these are sounded as a last ditch effort to get people to shelter, its better if youre in place before these go off. Anyways, Ill end my rant there. Im sure people will take it in different ways, but thats how I feel. Warning systems in this country have come a long way and are becoming more effective, but everyone has to do their part and heed the warnings when they are put out there. -Stay Safe!
