With loving appreciation and thanks, Cynthia, for speaking the deepest piece of my reflections about being a midwife. Your essay is so profound. It is complex for me to translate to others why I do this work, but I believe it is because it lives deep in the energy of my being and I cant resist my calling. It is often heart breaking in its inability to honor quality time with our lovers, family, friends...or to heal the most wounded expectations of those I serve and teach in my limited (and very human) capacity. I am never completely available because half my love is already engaged in birth-land (which is quite a trip sometimes...). Waking today after a MUCH needed deep sleep and mystical dreams, I pulled back the curtain to fresh snow on the ground. Surprise and childlike joy for this desert dweller! After the wonderful Canadian Association of Midwives conference, a short week after the Midwives Alliance of North America conference and with the knowledge that the aboriginal midwives of NACM are gathering just 1.7 km away from where I write this...this essay, snow and fresh made pancakes were part of todays universal message of LOVE. Because, yes, it is all about learning how to love and be loved, right? xoxo
