With permission from my counterpart Anna, she allowed me to post about her bride kidnapping/escape experience here in Kyrgyzstan: 12 years ago Anna was bride kidnapped in Naryn by a man that she did not know personally (brother of the teacher at the University that she worked at). Her teacher told her to take papers/documents and bring it to another University. They went outside and her teacher pulled over a car and asked to take her to the other University. As she sat in the car and they were driving past the University, she realized it was a bride kidnapping. At this time, there were no cell phones, but rather people wrote letters. The mans parents told her to write a letter stating that she would stay (to give to her parents). His parents brought the letter to her parents, but her parents knew that she did not want to be bride kidnapped and she was not dating anyone. Her parents went to the guys house to pick her up. She is now in a love marriage with two children and happy. The key part of the story is that as she grew up, her parents told her about bride kidnapping- dont be nervous, dont cry, be calm ... to write and dont worry because they will first talk with her to see if she decides to stay ... In this case, Anna had strong support of her parents and was not shunned from her community.
