With the ease of access to purchasing products from overseas suppliers via the internet, it is important to be be sure that they are suitable and compliant to Australian regulations. Some important tips when purchasing ANY electrical item online (or elsewhere): 1.Always buy Australian compliant electrical products (and if in doubt ask for proof) 2.Only buy electrical products from reputable stores and check for the compliance mark or approval number. 3.Be particularly vigilant when buying products manufactured overseas as they may not meet Australian standards 4.Remember that if you are buying anything online, it may NOT be compatible with Australian products and can cause electric shocks and/ or be a fire hazard. 5.If you notice any damaged wiring, contact your local licensed electrician – don’t try to fix it yourself 6.If you want to put lights outside in the weather, you MUST buy lights expressly produced for outdoor use (check the IP rating of the fitting) 7.Never modify or attempt to repair any lighting equipment yourself – always get an electrician to do the work It is also important to ensure you have safety switches installed on all electrical circuits in your home as safety switches are an additional safety measure that can prevent electrocution.
