With the latest in technology, it’s fair to say that songwriting isn’t the way that it used to be. Very rarely are musicians using “real” live instruments…but rather samples, plugins, MIDI, and virtual instruments. With the modern day benefit of having perfect timing, exact tuning, and access to any desired instrument or sound at the click of a mouse, it’s no surprise that technology has blindsided the music industry, and looks to be trailblazing the future as well. Some of the changes throughout the years have made music production far less tedious…such as the birth of digital recording, and the depart of cut and splice analog tape. Within digital recording spawned countless other electronic shortcuts to make production and development much easier…one of which being sampling. Sampling is defined as “The act of taking a portion, or sample, of one sound recording and reusing it as an instrument or a sound recording in a different song or piece.” With that said: there are multiple tools that can be used to inquire samples into music, or creating music via samples independently. One of the many available tools used to exercise sampling in audio is the Ableton Launchpad. This pad is simply a board of programmable pads in which you can assign samples….and the options are limitless. Previewed in this blog is video of beat maestro Rick Fresco doing work on an Ableton Launchpad using just a selection of audio samples. Can it really be as easy as pressing a button?! ENJOY!
