With the off-season just around the corner, Id thought Id mention another vintage group which runs 2-day shows all across California, Arizona, Oregon, Idaho, Washington and Montana. You can visit their web-site at; West Coast Vintage Racers. You will see a breakdown of their 2014 schedule which included events on asphalt and dirt. The rules are pretty simple. All drivers must be 40 or older, 14 tires, NO wings, no down tubes and no dive bombing under cars upon corner entry. This year I was able to attend an LOKB event at Madera and a WCVR event at Meridian Idaho. The LOKB event drew 17 cars and there was hardly a sole in the stands despite the fact several other division of cars were competing. In contrast the WCVR event in Idaho drew 32 vintage cars including sprints, supers, roadsters and midgets and both nights the grandstands were packed. The other obvious difference between the two groups is the LOKB participants drive parade style (no racing and no high speed passing) while the WCVR participants actually race their cars and pass at speed. It should be noted the majority of LOKB cars are quite old and do not have modern day safety equipment so there is good reason for them not to race competitively. In addition the LOKB is basically a private group of individuals with their own rules, guidelines, procedures, etc., and I respect that. Anybody who has followed this site for the last year has obviously noticed there are two very different opinions about how vintage cars should be driven. I can also assure the readers theres an even more pronounced difference between the two groups when it comes to racing vintage cars as the WCVR members oppose parading their cars. Vintage racing boils down to one of two mind sets.....parading or racing. Although I respect the LOKB members and what they stand for, I personally cannot bring myself to own a vintage car for parade or exhibition style driving purposes. After my trip to Madera earlier this year, it became apparent to me that exhibition style driving was not going to satisfy my competitive nature. This notion was later reinforced after watching the WCVR cars race at near capacity speeds in Idaho and thats why I came home with a 1968 vintage roadster which blends vintage 60s styling with modern racing equipment and respectable horsepower. Its a race car and I have every intention of racing it. I wish nothing but the best and continued success for all the LOKB members and their supporters. But for you vintage guys who respect the vintage race car for what it was originally designed and built for (racing), do yourself a favor and check out; West Coast Vintage Racers. They conduct events all over the west on dirt and asphalt. And if youre attending the West Capitol Reunion and vintage show at Roseville this coming Friday and Saturday, stop by the Shop Dog roadster and say hi!
