With the recent tragic death of a 17-month-old toddler in Sydney’s west, the issue of police pursuits is once again in the spotlight. And it has inspired heated debate that has sometimes turned into unsavoury exchanges on social media. ‘Skye’s law’ is an amendment to the NSW Crimes Act which makes it a criminal offence to engage in police pursuits. It prescribes harsh maximum penalties for those who are guilty, including lengthy prison sentences. According to the NSW Judicial Commission, 42% of first-time offenders in the Local Court between October 2010 and September 2014, and 100% of first-time offenders in the District Court between March 2010 and June 2014 were sent to prison. Our latest blog outlines ‘Skye’s law’ and discusses the controversial questions of: a) whether police pursuits should occur in dangerous situations, and b) whether police pursuit guidelines should be made publicly available for debate. What are your thoughts?
