With the world cup under way we thought it a good moment to remind our followers of this presentation on the recent struggles in Brazil against public transport fair hikes. A Brazilian anarchist on a tour of Europe told the Dublin WSM about this late last year, more details of this impressive struggle below. These slides are from a presentation by Victor Khaled, a Brasilian militant of the Free Pass Movement (MPL) from Florianapolis in Santa Caterina state. The MPL shot to international fame in June and July 2013 when their protests against bus fare increases sparked a nation-wide uprising of millions in protest against government spending on prestige projects like the football World Cup, while neglecting creaking public infrastructure and services. In his presentation Victor talked about how the anarchists of the Brasilian Anarchist Coordination (CAB) came to recognise the key social role that public transport failures had in depriving working class and poor Brasilians of their basic rights and needs, and how a campaign to challenge that through direct action, direct democracy and horizontalism could lead to victory.
