With this recent tragedy, I was just thinking back at how lucky I was back when I started racing. In the beginning my parents tried to stop me from racing and I still found a way to do it without them knowing. This picture was probably taken around 1990 and I had already raced a few years before this. I wasnt born into a racing family, but thank god my grandpa and uncle could stick weld. Even if they couldnt have helped I would have attempted it myself as long as I could still get out on that racetrack with it. Im sure this is how most mini Stocks and bombers are still built these days. I thought just because I knew a few people that raced for several years that they were telling me everything I needed to know about racing safely. I have learned a lot about safety over the last 25 years. The only time Ive seen cars really closely teched for safety is in The ASA Series and recently with the CHUMPCAR World Series. Of course a Hans and full containment seat (The The Joie of Seating has used ones) are the way to go, but if your seat is mounted properly to the cage and has headrests, your belts are mounted to the cage as close to the seat as possible, your head cant reach any bars (but youve padded them all anyways) and you have an aluminum steering wheel which will give some if impacted then you will have a pretty safe car already. If anyone ever has any safety related questions about a kids car they are buying, building or working on, you can send me a private facebook message, or have myself or my brother Danny Partelo look your car over at the racetrack or at our race shop for free!
