With two matches away from their elusive maiden South - TopicsExpress

With two matches away from their elusive maiden South Asian Federation Football Championship title, the national football team of Nepal is riding high, following their victory over India in the final game of the round robin league in Kathmandu. The hosts won its group outright with two wins and a draw to advance to the last four. They head into the semi- final against Afghanistan, with spirits and confidence soaring high. Undoubtedly, their success against defending champions India was a big psychological boost. Everyone agrees that Nepal played well, with its incisive and aggressive brand of football, for the most part. This success was a great collective effort that paid off handsomely for the team. It was a relief for everyone to see the experienced duo of Jumanu and Anil score a goal each to ensure Nepal’s victory. The defense stood tall throughout the game and the offensive line did reasonably well. However, there is still plenty of work to be done, especially in midfield. There is a need for a more creative and cohesive play on the part of midfielders In addition, the team does not have a true innovative player maker in the class of former international Umesh Pradhan who is able to hold the team together and maneuver moves, at the same time. The midfielders are expected to be active in both offense and defense. Against Afghanistan Nepal need to up the ante and play with three strikers, two creative midfielders and two defensive midfielders. Just a thought. Apparently, optimism abounds in local football fans that is tangible. Having seen their side perform exceedingly well, now they genuinely believe that Coach Stefanowski boys have a real shot at winning the championship. Partisan support has been overwhelming and played a big part in getting the home team going. Unlike in the past, this time they have not let their fans down to this point. So far, everything is going hunky- dory for the hosts I also feel the same. As a matter of fact, despite enormous pressure, the boys have been playing pretty well and they must continue that. They have the momentum on their side and it is very important to keep it going. Also they have to keep building the consistency going into every game from here onwards. There is a good vibe going on through the team, which is a very positive sign. Keep in mind, every match is a new challenge, and the team must be committed to excellence and to victory. Without a doubt, the formidable Afghani outfit will put the hosts to the test and try to spoil the party for home fans . Let us not forget that they prevailed over Nepal in this same stage of the competition in the 2011 edition. They are a big, dangerous and physical football team , with a tenacious defense and offensively skilled speedy forwards and ariel superiority. Coach Stefanowski is fully aware of the opposition’s strength. He has to get the right offensive and defensive strategies to counter the opponent. The one thing I know for certain is that they are capable of beating the hosts if they are not at their best. That being said, Nepal has a great opportunity to win. In order for this to happen the team need to step up their game. And there is absolutely no room for complacency and sloppiness.
