With us so close to veterans day, Id like to acknowledge not only our armed forces but also those whose lives have been forever affected by our militarys presence. In going into a country, our mark is more than just the imprint of the boots on the ground, but also the relationships that are found. While these friendships have served the US well in the past, it is painful how often political expediency dictates that we forget the friend of yesterday. In Iraq, many American-aligned Sunni tribes of the north have been cut off and left to fend for themselves against both the Iraqi government and the fundamentalist forces. In Vietnam, countless south Vietnamese were brutally purged once the US left. It is a sad truth that leave no man behind only goes so far. Recently, my father was in Rory Kennedys movie Last Days in Vietnam. She investigates the US withdrawal in light of Americas recent engagements. If you are interested in the lives we affect beyond just our troops, definitely check it out: https://youtube/watch?v=RTWX-BB4aAA newsweek/does-kennedys-vietnam-war-documentary-foreshadow-tragedies-baghdad-and-kabul-270402 I would like to honor the memory of not only those Americans whom have served for our freedom, but also the memory of our friends that we have left behind.
