Within a week of being dismissed by the new government, former Climate Commissioner Dr Tim Flannery has put in motion plans to continue the commission’s work as a privately funded council. But as James Bourne reports, it remains unclear how the expensive activities of the new body will be funded. New Environment Minister Greg Hunt scrapped the Australian Climate Commission in one of his first acts as minister last week, and said overnight that Flannery’s plans to establish a ‘Climate Council’ vindicated his decision.
