Within many of our Muslim communities there is a common occurrence of women taking on the surname or first name of their husbands. This practice has nothing to do with Islam and is forbidden within the religion. A grave punishment will be ordained for those who follow such cultural practices. It was narrated from Abu Dharr (radiallahu anhu) that he heard the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) say: “There is no man who knowingly calls himself after someone other than his father but he has committed kufr. Whoever claims to belong to people to whom he has no ties of blood, let him take his place in Hell.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 3317; Muslim, 61) Due to the gravity of the sin this is something sisters need to find out from their potential husbands before they get married. If he wants you to change your surname then he should go search for a wife in his country of origin and leave you be. This is a perfect example of how Islam is just to women. The irony is that the very people who state that Islam oppresses women are the first to take on the rules of a society that oppresses their rights. In the West, the majority of women who get married tend to take the surname of their spouse. This method not only inhibits a womans identity but it also destroys the identification of her lineage, which is prohibited in Islam. On the other hand, Islam teaches us the importance of women holding onto their identity and individual rights after marriage.
