Within the realm of Beat Juggling there are a variety of approaches. One of the original styles are #Breakdowns or #Tapouts as some call it. This technique revolves around your ability to manually separate kicks, snares and high hats with the goal of slowing down the tempo of the particular drum section youre manipulating. However, as a Beat Juggler, if all you do are #Breakdowns that can get boring. Especially in a battle. Your goal in 6 minutes must be to showcase as many ways of changing the beat of a song as possible. This is how to ensure youre captivating the attention of the judges in back of you, and the audience in front of you. After introducing my student Sarah Djshines Hines to #Breakdown Beat Juggles last year, I figured 2015 was the year for her to start learning what I call #SpeedJuggles. Unlike #Tapouts, #SpeedJuggling requires you to alter the drum pattern of a song at the same tempo it plays. You achieve this by moving quickly and opening the crossfader in the middle of a backspin in order fill in open spaces of sound. This take time to master as you can see by the video. But once you start understanding how to move your hands swiftly while maintaining control, an entirely new spectrum of Beat Juggling will be afforded to you.
