Woman and Fetus Are Killed in Stabbing Published: September 9, 2007 A pregnant woman stabbed another pregnant woman to death at a Long Island homeless shelter where both women were staying with their children, the Suffolk County police said yesterday. The victim’s fetus also died. The two women were eight months pregnant, and had been quarreling for some time, but it was unclear why, according to the police. They were living at Project ReDirect, a homeless shelter on Pine Aire Drive in North Bay Shore that has about 20 residents. About 10 p.m. on Friday, Shantelle Scruggs, 21, cornered Barbara Santos, 26, in the room of another female resident and stabbed her in the chest, the police said. Ms. Santos was taken to Southside Hospital, where she was declared dead at 11:23 p.m. Doctors at the hospital tried to save the baby, but it was too late. Ms. Santos had two other children, who are 6 and 7. Ms. Scruggs has 1-year-old twins. The children had been with their mothers at the shelter and were removed by social service authorities, the police said. Neither woman had a criminal record, according to Detective Lt.
