Woman taking her husband’s name or his family name after marriage – NOT ISLAMIC By Abubakr Amosa Ibraheem It is not permissible, in Islam, for anyone to call himself or herself or another person after anyone’s name except his or her legitimate father – no matter what the reasons for wishing to do so. Allaah says: “Call them (adopted sons) by the names of their fathers…” [al- Ahzaab 33:5]. It is kufr (disbelieving) by knowingly attributing oneself to someone other than one’s father. Abu Dharr Rodiyallahu ‘anih narrated that he heard the Prophet Solallahu ‘alayhi wasalam saying: “Any man who knowingly attributes himself to someone other than his father is guilty of kufr. Whoever claims to belong to a people when he has nothing to do with them (meaning when he has no lineage among them), let him take his place in Hell.” Bukhari (3508) and Muslim (61) Imitating the kuffaar (Disbelievers) from whom this custom was adopted. ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar said: The Prophet Solallahu ‘alayhi wasalam said: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” Narrated by Abu Dawood, 3512; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Irwa’ al- Ghaleel, 2691. In some jurisdictions, changing one’s name requires a legal procedure while wife may get divorced, or her husband may die, and she may marry another man. Will she keep changing her surname every time she marries another man? That is wasting of time and resources. My Allah says: “Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful”. [Quran 17:27]. And .. “Their cry was only that they said: Our Lord! forgive us for our sins and wasted efforts, make our foothold sure, and give us victory over the disbelieving folk”. [Quran 3:147] Based on aforementioned evidences, women are not allowed to change their surnames to their husband names after marriage. See how Sohabiyyah (Companions) been named and wives of the Prophet Solallahu ‘alayhi wasalam; Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (rodiyallahu ‘aniha), Aisha bint Abibakr (rodiyallahu ‘aniha),….they are our role model, emulate them!
