Women and children so much on my mind of late, if you cant tell by my posts. Then tonight, I attended an awards dinner, with 25 women recognized (by a local business and a large corporation) for their achievements, mostly as businesswomen. With absolutely NO disrespect to the honorees - the one I was there with BREATHES making the world a better place and works her ASS off - I left feeling sick, and frustrated, and angry, and so very disheartened. Twenty-five honorees - ONE woman of color - ZERO Black women. ZERO. And if I wasnt yet sure of where I was, or with whom I was dealing, the organizer asked the men attending the event to stand, and the audience was told to applaud them - for attending this WOMENs event. The organizers cited the increasing number of male attendees each year as evidence of the success of the event, and heaped praise upon those men for being there. Other than acknowledging the hard work of women, this was wrong, so wrong, in so very many ways wrong. If it werent for my friend, who gets so little recognition for the heart and soul she pours into her work, I doubt that I would have stayed. I am sure that she noticed the same things I did, and Im sure it cast a pall on her experience too. Words and feelings, buzzing through my body. I will do something, for sure, but I think about all of the people in that room - how many noticed? How many cared? Saw my dear friend Lee Ann Munger there - I am sure SHE noticed. I can only hope that there were others, and that they will communicate with the organizer as well.
