Wonderful avian conservationists, are you wondering what that incredible dove-like bird of prey is that youve been seeing lately? Well, MIKIs have returned to South Carolina! Mississippi Kites (Ictinia mississippiensis) , aka MIKIs, spend their winters in South America, but return annually to the southeastern US to breed. They have a pale grey head with a darker grey body and can be seen soaring as they hunt insects on the wing. Like other kites, they rarely flap their wings and instead use their tails to change direction and altitude. These birds will be seen nesting in colonies and can become aggressive defenders of their nesting territory even to the point of chasing away scary predators like humans! If you have MIKIs in your area, be aware AND be very very pleased as they are truly special birds to experience... and, if you dont have them in your area, you can always come for a visit to see them here at the Center! #mississippikite https://youtube/watch?v=yeKsyVUZy8c&list=PLB5883CB131B1730F
