Word of honor is very important factor in social interactions. In some way or another it helps strengthen relationships among people from all walks of life. But when used to conceal a hidden agenda and impure motive it definitely loses its sense. In todays Gospel, Herod clearly misunderstood the true meaning of word of honor. It is supposed to be grounded on justice, and ultimately promoted goodness. But Herod clearly acted on these foundations but on ignorance and foolish judgement. This incident simply reminds us that before we act on things that would put us in a very delicate situation, we must be able to discern well. We must have the capacity to weigh things first and evaluate the pros and cons of every action by bringing them into deep reflection and prayer. This entire process is what we call DISCERNMENT. As followers of Christ, it is a challenge for us all that before making any concrete steps and decisions we must be able to imbibe the spirit of a discerning heart and mind....Fr. Roger Solis, SVD...
