Word of the Day: (more like the week because its cool): Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication or V2V! Vehicle-to-vehicle communication is the use of electronics to provide an inter-vehicle network. Vehicle 2 Vehicle (#V2V), developed by General Motors, is the most common form of vehicle-to-vehicle communication system and has become the accepted standard. V2V is part of the intelligent transport system (#ITS) concept, which includes not only road vehicles but also infrastructure, users, traffic management and interfaces with other types of transportation. Current car manufacturers working on ITS and V2V include #GM, #BMW, #Audi, #Daimler and #Volvo. V2V involves an ad hoc 5.9Ghz Wi-Fi-like network to enable private and public data communication on the road. The public aspect, because it provides the safety features, is the more important consideration. As such, the public communications can override the private communications when necessary. The system incorporates GPS-based and other sensors into the ITS system to communicate with other cars and road-side base stations. V2V enables safety features like warnings for road hazards, accidents, emergency stops and “do not pass” situations, as well as notices that emergency and law enforcement vehicles need clearance on the road. V2V can also perform intersection right-of-way management. Sensors in a vehicle can enable obstacle discovery and would notify other cars. The United States congress set aside the 5.9Ghz range for vehicle-to-vehicle communication in 1999. The technology could become mandatory in the not-too-distant future, where it could also lead to the rise of the driverless-car.
