Words from Barry about the weekend gone We have just had a great weekend of tennis with the visit of the ‘Bartlett’ team from Ballarat and their supporters. Much against the grain of recent such matches Ballarat got off to a flying start leading 2 matches to nil and almost 3 nil but for a thrilling 9/8 victory by Simon Dwyer and Hans Drielsma. Most matches were very close and entertaining and Ballarat kept the pressure on finishing 7 – 5 in front at the end of play. A most entertaining evening at Smolt Restaurant with superb food and wine saw Ballarat basking in their lead though some were less than impressed with the result of the Carlton match on a big screen not too far away1 Then, as the dinner wrapped up, with people heading off into the cool of the night, out comes our secret weapon. In the true form of all good doubles combinations, be it Holmes and Watson or The Lone Ranger and Tonto, heading into the fray come our non-playing destroyers, Hilton and Esther. Totally under-estimated and thoroughly committed they decimated the opposition on scotch and camaraderie into the very early hours of Sunday morning. With the sun coming up and heads drooped it was obviously going to be no match for our dedicated team of ‘bed before 11pmers’ and so it turned out. It must be pointed out that not all the ‘Rats’ embarked on the debacle and one of the team members did play injured, but more than enough damage was done. The Sunday result was 8 matches to 1 in our favour thus retaining the trophy 13 – 8 It was a very brave Hilton and Esther who turned up to watch midday-ish on Sunday but their victims were in no position to retaliate.
