Work books I introduced a formal system of maintaining work - TopicsExpress

Work books I introduced a formal system of maintaining work books and records of all design calculations and logic behind decisions in the design directorate. It served as a training aid for junior officers and as a reference for new designs. Some times mistakes were discovered and corrected in time. The basic design, layout and arrangements of LST Magar was done by a group headed by me in the early seventies. I personally worked out the design of the bow door system, tank deck arrangements and layouts of the troops messes. I had to interact closely with Army Headquarters and get details of Vijayantha tanks for which the LST was designed. I was guilty of a serious error in working out exhaust requirements for the tank deck When fifteen tanks are started and their engines are idling before landing on a beach, huge amounts of exhaust gases are released in the closed space and have to be removed. I under estimated the capacity of the tank deck exhaust fans by a factor of ten!. Fortunately,a junior officer involved later in detailing discovered my blunder. He corrected the error and installed larger exhaust fans . When I met him, he told me half triumphantly that I had made a bloomer of astronomical proportions! I thanked him but pointed out that while my exhaust design might not have worked, the work book system which I had developed and introduced had worked. Otherwise, he would not have discovered the error! I wonder what is the system followed now in Directorate of Naval Design, since everything can be stored in a hard discs these days!
