Work has begun on the new Seoul headquarters of Korean cosmetics company Amorepacific following a groundbreaking ceremony earlier this month. The project was won by David Chipperfield Architects in 2010 and will comprise offices, conference facilities, a museum, restaurants and retail units when it completes in 2017. The site for the new Amorepacific headquarters is located in close proximity to the new public Yongsan Park and an International Business District with high rise buildings. David Chipperfield Architects has deliberately crafted the design so as to avoid any visual similarities with these planned forms, thus commanding attention in the area. The lower levels will centre on a core atrium with public facilities branching off it. These amenities include a large auditorium, restaurants and retail facilities, a museum, and a conference area. Above this will be the non-public functions such as office and staff facilities, plus an elevated garden for use by the onsite staff. A central courtyard has also been incorporated into the plans and three large openings cut into the form. These grand openings will frame views outwards towards the nearby developments and mountains beyond, and all entrances are united at ground floor level to generate a public place of arrival that connects the building with the wider urban realm. Considering the external appearance of the building form, the architects explain: “The abstract expression of the façade is mainly provided through a second skin of fixed and differently sized aluminium fins in front of full-height glass panes acting as brise-soleil. Through subtle changes and random positioning of the fins, the building assumes varying qualities of lightness and heaviness, texture and surface.”
