Work is Progressing on the Otway Covered Bridge! According to Otway, Ohio Mayor Suzanne Nichols work is progressing well on the Otway Covered Bridge rehabilitation project. Mayor Nichols recently visited the site and reported that most of the old siding boards had been removed and once they are all removed all the wood and metal will be cleaned with high pressure air in order to determine what will need replaced on the bridge. A foreman on the project told Norvel Davis of the Otway Historical Society and Otway Covered Bridge Committee that the project will be completed earlier than expected, possibility as soon as the end of May. The Scioto County Commissioners, who now own the bridge, awarded a $421,900 contract to the Righter Company of Columbus in November of 2013 to make repairs to the historic structure and work started in earnest in February. In 2011 the county received a $285,025 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to help repair the bridge that had fallen into disrepair during the past few decades. The bridge was erected in 1874 and was in use until 1963 when it was bypassed. The bridge is the last remaining covered bridge of 80 some that once dotted the landscape throughout Scioto County. The bridge was completely restored in 1974 by the Village of Otway and is listed on the National Registry.
