Work is underway to repair the road damage caused by the flooding of Eureka and Friday Creeks in Kantishna. The state Department of Transportation (DOT) brought equipment to the site Saturday night and work began on Sunday. They are making good progress - the debris has been cleared from the Friday and Eureka Creek sections of road. There is a significant washout just east of Eureka Creek, i.e. half of the road is gone, making it currently impassable to vehicles. There may be an estimate later today on when limited administraive access will be possible. No time frame yet as to when the road will be open for regular bus traffic to the end of the park road. The NPS is working with Alaska Department of Transportation (DOT)on the road repair. The park has provided equipment for the road repair and assigned a NPS road crew member to work with the three DOT employees at Friday Creek. The NPS is also hauling gravel from Toklat to the site for road repairs. Four dump trucks will each make two rounds trips per day as long as the gravel is needed. Photos of damage coming soon! - kaf
