Working in an elementary school is still a very new experience for me. The first 30 minutes were hectic as children needed encouragement in finding their classrooms, parents came in for a last minute questions about buses, etc, phones were ringing...yep, it was controlled chaos (at least thats what I tell myself). Then, I turned my focus to my main job...taking attendance using a new computer program. In my uncertainness about my task (wishing for the familiar computer program from last year), I found myself purposefully walking down to the first grade hallway to see if teachers had submitted their attendance YET!! Good grief, it was already 45 minutes into this new school year. As I stopped and looked in Mrs. Ps classroom ready to walk in and ask my very important question about attendance (MUST DO JOB!!), I see her sitting in a chair with her arm around a child and a gaggle of children at her feet. The faces of the children were pure delight as they watched the child share boldly with the teachers arm for support. OK, I decided to go on to the next class...and there is Mrs. Babinski surely telling something very wonderful to her little ones for their eyes were glued on her with great fascination. Then to Mrs. Countiss and again, children sitting at her feet, wide-eyed and in awe of the words being said to them. And, Mrs. Kimberlain and Mrs. Kelly, the same wonderfulness...then on to Ms. Mohney and Mrs. McGhee, teachers drawing these little minds into a world of wonder and learning! I didnt bother a one of those teachers as my task of attendance seemed insignificant and certainly not worthy of interrupting such sweet, to be treasured moments. I got to see with my own eyes the best of what school is...the very best of what true teachers are called to do. It is amazing!!
