Working in the pediatric ICU over the past month has dramatically influenced my perspective on the resilience of children to fight disease. At the same time, Ive gotten a front seat to the pain and suffering afforded by the state-of-the-art care offered in the United States. I have profound respect for the hard intellectual and emotional work demonstrated by Intensivists every day. Compassion should continue to prevail in those most challenging of times. While I am relieved to have my life back (the hours and work are grueling), training in one of the busiest pediatric ICUs in the country has made me a much better doctor.
