Workshop on Real-Time Interactive Web-Based Distance Learning Environment for Europe - South East Asia - Japan Happening at Ateneo de Manila University, November 29, 2014; hosted by the Ateneo Innovation Center. About the Workshop The development and integration of real-time, interactive distance education that connects different countries is crucial to ensure that educational methodology for schools and universities can be shared across different continents. The challenges faced by such multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-lingual distance education programs are numerous, including differing levels of development of participating countries, multiple time zones, as well as difficulty in interpreting interactive verbal and non-verbal communications through the constraints of the video conferencing environment. These issues are faced by ASEAN, Japan as well as European countries. As such, it is necessary for close cooperation with researchers from SEA, Japan and Europe to define the framework and interoperability requirements for building a web architecture-based distance learning environment, named WASABI. The goal of WASABI is to provide a better experience for the lecturers and students by facilitating engagements and understanding the students’ behaviors in real-time classes. For example: WASABI analyses students’ clickstreams and personal cameras then gives feedback to the lecturers in order for them to respond accordingly. The purpose of this workshop is to gather researchers from Europe, SEA and Japan to set up proposal development and consortium formation in view of Horizon 2020 calls ICT 20-2015: Technologies for better human learning and teaching. This event will be an open dialogue to discuss and elaborate proposal ideas and building proposal for WASABI targeting ICT 20-2015 calls that close in April 2015.
