World Coconut Day celebrated befittingly Port Blair, Sept. 2 Along with the rest of the country, the World Coconut Day-2014 with the theme, “Neera, the future of coconut sector in India” was also celebrated here today. To mark the occasion, a programme was organized by Agriculture Department in association with Coconut Development Board and Agriculture Technology Management Agency, in the Panchayat Samity Hall, Ferrargunj this morning. Inaugurating the programme as chief guest, the Director, Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Dr. S. Dam Roy highlighted the importance of coconut and called upon the farmers to make the coconut a vibrant industry. Highlighting the benefits of Neera, he suggested that this product of coconut can flourish if exploited in a commercial way. He further informed that CIARI has released four varieties of coconut including one ornamental variety to promote this crop in this Island. The Pramukh, Panchayat Samiti, Ferrargunj, Shri Mohammed Safiq who was the guest of honour, lauded the efforts of Agriculture Department for selecting such a remote area for organizing the programme for the benefit of the farming community and appealed to the Department to take initiatives for supporting price of coconut and subsidy to the coconut cooperative societies. Chairman Farmers Advisory Committee Shri N.N.Nag also spoke on the occasion. Earlier, the In-charge, Director Agriculture, Shri Mantu Biswas, welcomed the gathering. The inaugural session was followed by a technical session. A power point presentation on Coconut Scenario in Andaman & Nicobar Islands was made by the Director (Agri.). Dr. T.Damodaran, Scientist, CIARI, discussed in detail about the Neera and its future prospectus in these Islands. A questionnaire session with the participants was also held at the end of the programme and the qualified winners were awarded cash prize. The programme concluded with vote of thanks by Shri R.Y.Singh, Assistant Director (Agri), South Andaman. Altogether 100 participants including coconut growers of South Andaman, PRI members, Farmers Friends, officers and staff of department of Agriculture participated in the programme, a communication received here said.
