World Hockey Association franchise of the day....The Denver - TopicsExpress

World Hockey Association franchise of the day....The Denver Spurs...a franchise that was really the bi-product and combination of a potential NHL franchise in wait ready to jump into the newly constructed McNichols Sports Arena...however the Spurs becoming an NHL club would never materialize....the NHL had plans on moving the California Seals to Denver and the Penguins to Seattle...which obviously did not materialize...thus leaving the Spur ownership group to jump into the WHA... By the middle of their first year in the WHA the home attendance was horrific, the owner failed to get a liquor license in time for the home opener, the team play was pitiful and the gamble to take on the WHA when the market was waiting for the NHL backfired...by January 1976 not a full year in existence, the team was going to be sold and move to Ottawa to become the Ottawa Civics....the team actually learned of the sale while standing on the ice in Cincinnati waiting to play the Stingers when the organ played OCanada....the deal fell through within weeks and the team folded in early 1976. Some of the notable alums are: Darryl Maggs, Ralph Backstrom, Goldie Goldthorpe, Ron Delorme, Jan Popiel, JP Leblanc and Barry Legge....
